Don't Worry, Be Happy

Stress in your place of work is almost never a good thing. However, when it comes to stress among people who work with patients with autism and/or a mental disability its importance is on another level.

A healthy and calm environment creates happiness and wellbeing for both the patient and employees. Stress-related absence is a major issue in the healthcare sector. Wizzin approached us to help figure this puzzle out.

The Challenge

How can stress be reduced among employees, and in doing so providing better healthcare? We were provided with the Empatica E4 bracelet, which is a wearable research device that offers real-time physiological data.

With this technology in our backpockets we started working on a solution that can measure stress. The challenge was to create a prototype that can be tested on employees of Amarant, a mental healthcare institute.

User Research

First thing in the design process is to get to know the target group. Since the target group is relatively small we are able to test directly with the end-users. We walked around the institute to see what the working conditions were like for the employees, how they interact with their patients, and how this affects them.

We also tested a couple of scenarios on the employees to see how they would react to specific situations, and how they tend to deal with stress. With this information, we crafted several personas, who form the basis for the Customer Journey and the Design Prototype.

Design Prototype

The results of the user tests show that insights into their stress levels are a crucial factor when it comes to reducing stress. We designed a prototype where employees get insights into their stress levels. This information is linked to their calendar so they can see which appointment causes them the most stress. To cope with these stressful moments they get some tips & tricks on how to calm down.

Technical Prototype

Stress is not the easiest thing to measure, its characteristics are very diverse. We created a technical prototype where an algorithm measures stress through characteristics such as heart rate, and EDA. (EDA measures the constantly fluctuating changes in electrical properties of the skin.)

The Future Is…

So what’s next? Currently, Wizzin is conducting scientific research into the properties of stress, to find an easy way to measure it. The technical prototype is currently being tested on employees of Amarant. These results will be used to develop of full-fledged product to reduce stress among mental health workers.
